-
- From: John Parlin - Author of TMD
-
- Subject: Instructions on how to be a good Trivia Master
-
- Dear Trivia Master,
-
- I'm writing this to provide you, the Trivia Master (TM), assigned to
- administer the Trivia Master's Den (TMD), assistance in getting
- started.
-
- First of all, congratulations! You are now the proud TM of your own
- Trivia Den. The TMD was written to provide you an effecient means of
- running your own Trivia Den.
-
- Although you've assumed a responsibility, TMD will help with the
- day-to-day chores like grading qualified questions, maintaining the
- databases, and providing automated assistance wherever possible. So
- rest assured, although your job may appear to be large, it has been
- extremely simplified.
-
- Your first order of business is to determine how your Trivia Den will
- operate. When you first enter TMD, the Sysop should already have
- determined initial settings. Now it's time for you to customize them.
-
- When in TMD, select the T>rivia Master Services Menu. From here,
- select C>onfiguration Services. This will present you with a list of
- operating parameters along with their current values. Each prompt is
- explained below. Take care in assigning new values to these prompts
- and also consider the Sysop's desires.
-
-
- Trivia Master's Name:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- This is the BBS user name of the Trivia Master assigned to this Den.
- By changing this, you fire yourself as the Trivia Master so I would
- not recommend changing it unless drastic measures are required. This
- should be your name.
-
-
- Name of this Trivia Den:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- This is the name of the Trivia Den. You give your Den its own name.
- Enter a name up to 40 characters long.
-
-
- Max game questions allowed in database:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- This is a read-only field and displayed so you the TM can see what the
- size limit of your questions data is. The questions database has the
- potential to get real big. The bigger the database, the more it
- affects program operation and effeciency. This option allows the Sysop
- to determine the maximum number of questions that can be in the
- questions database at any given time. The Sysop has already reviewed
- this setting so if you need it changed, you'll have to ask. A value
- of 100 is the default and allows a decent-sized database that operates
- effeciently. Allowed settings are from 25 to 255.
-
-
- Max questions stored in historical database:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- This is a read-only field and displayed so you the TM can see what the
- size limit of the historical database is. The historical database, if
- used, holds previously removed questions for later re-use. Ideally,
- this should be greater than the maximum question database size.
- A setting of twice the size is recommended. When questions are
- removed from TMD during maintenance, they can be moved here instead of
- being deleted entirely. When this database reaches its maximum size,
- it is trimmed by removing the oldest questions while adding new ones.
- This type of circular database will cycle questions through depending
- on the other settings you defined (below). Allowable settings are
- from 25 to 255.
-
-
- Number of historical questions to re-use each time TRIVPACK is run:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- When inactive answered questions are removed from the database, it
- seems such a waste to delete a valid trivia question. Therefore,
- questions are removed from the questions database and placed in a
- historical database for later re-use. Then, each time the maintenance
- program TRIVPACK.EXE is run, the number of questions specified here
- will be re-posted into the questions database.
-
- NOTES: If no questions in the historical database qualify for
- re-posting, none are. See the next prompt for further
- information. Setting this field to '0' disables the
- historical database completely.
-
-
- Age (in days) a historic question must be before being re-used:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Whenever a historical database question is saved or re-posted, it's
- date is changed to the current date. Then when historical questions
- are being posted, only those that are 'old enough' will qualify for
- re-posting. For example, if set to 30, a question can only be
- re-posted once every 30 days.
-
-
- Operate in Free Running mode:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Unless you are also the Sysop, this will generally be set to NO. If
- set to YES, you still oversee things as the TM and you have the
- ultimate access, however players are able to enter their own
- questions. This may create a situation where policing the posted
- questions may be required to sort out inappropriate context. In Free
- Running mode, players enter and administer their own questions while
- being able to enter answers to questions posted by other players.
- Even you as the Trivia Master can compete when in Free Running mode.
-
-
- Max questions players may post per day in Free Run mode:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- If you decided to use Free Running, this is the number of questions
- that players will be able to enter on any given day.
-
-
- Days to retain inactive users:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- When players log-on only never to return, you can specify the number
- of days they will be retained. Just enter the number of days and
- TRIVPACK.EXE will get rid of the non-players.
-
-
- Days to retain inactive answered questions:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Once a question is answered, players generally don't post further
- comments against them. You can specify how long a question will be
- retained if it is inactive (no comments being posted against it). For
- example, if set to 7, questions that have been answered will be
- removed if there has been no response activity for 7 or more days.
- TRIVPACK.EXE performs this function.
-
-
- New players allowed access automatically:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- If set to YES, new players are automatically added to the player
- database when they enter. When set to NO, the user is advised to
- leave you a message on the BBS requesting access. Then, you as the TM
- would add the player's BBS user name manually by using the TM Services
- Menu. Obviously, it is more work for you if this prompt is set to NO
- so I would recommend setting it to YES and allowing TMD to maintain
- the player database. This option is more geared towards abuse
- situations.
-
-
- Answers allowed per day per player:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- This is the number of answers each player may enter on any given day.
- This allows you to regulate the rate of competition, as it were.
-
-
- Should qualified questions be auto-graded?
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- If this is set to YES, then any question that can have its answers
- graded automatically during game play, will. Questions that qualify
- are multiple-choice and exact-answer standard formats. The only type
- of question which must be graded manually is the free-form standard
- format. This feature enhances real-time play in that players get to
- see the results of their guesses, along with scorecard adjustments, on
- the spot. If set to NO, the TM or creator of a question must grade
- all answers manually.
-
-
- Auto-Answer questions after 'n' days:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Questions may go unanswered because no one knows the answers. What is
- to become of them? Should they sit there in the database forever
- bringing action to a crawl? Use this prompt to tell TMD how long to
- keep those unanswered questions. After as many days goes by, TRIVPACK
- will automatically post the correct answer to the question and mark
- it as answered.
-
-
- Should monthly-tournament mode be used?
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- If you're running a monthly tournament, turn this ON. When this
- feature is enabled, here's how it works:
-
- When this is turned on, the game assumes you are maintaining a monthly
- tournament. This prevents players from entering answers to questions
- during a new month before the TM has had a chance to close-out (end)
- the previous month's game. NOTE: This is a TM option only and must be
- changed from the TM's menu. The default is OFF.
-
-
- This concludes the configuration of your TMD operating parameters.
- Select Q>uit and continue reading.
-
- You have essentially 3 main responsibilities as the Trivia Master.
- Each is explained in detail below.
-
- Responsibility #1:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Your primary responsibility as the Trivia Master is to enter new
- trivia questions and grade responses to questions that cannot be
- auto-graded.
-
- To enter questions, Select E>nter Question from the TMD main menu and
- enter a category name when prompted. Next, you'll choose from two
- types of question formats. These are key in that they determine
- the layout of the question and whether or not the question can be
- graded automatically during game play.
-
- The two types of question formats are multiple-choice and standard.
- Multiple-choice questions allow you to enter the question text and
- then the individual choices. Standard format questions allow you to
- enter the question text and then the exact answer that is required to
- correctly answer the question. These two types of question formats
- permit automatic grading to be used. Standard format questions also
- support free-form (not exact) answers which must be graded manually by
- you. So the format you choose determines whether or not questions are
- suitable for automatic grading which, if you use it, will make your
- job much simpler.
-
- Responsibility #2:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- One of your other responsibilities is to grade answers stored as
- responses to questions since your last call. A quick way of doing
- this is to use the V>iew Questions menu. From this menu, you can
- select to L>ist questions. From the List Options menu, you can list
- questions using a number of search criteria including finding
- questions with pending answers. After reading pending answers, you'll
- be given the opportunity to grade them on a case-by-case basis.
-
- Responsibility #3:
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Another responsibility is to close the game out when you decide. Will
- you be running a monthly tournament? Weekly? Longer or shorter?
- This is totally up to you. Whatever you decide, at the end of the
- tournament period, make a note of the score card list to determine the
- winner and any runner-ups. Then zero out all scores from the TM
- Services Menu to start the game over while retaining the current
- question and response databases.
-
- There are lots of other things you can do to be a proactive TM. For
- instance, you can create announcements (bulletins) that are displayed
- to callers to convey any information you need. You can manually
- adjust score card entries, if necessary. You can add, change, or
- delete players, view the stored correct answers to questions, and
- more. This is YOUR TMD.
-
- Two text files which you can define are also supported. If you create
- these files, send them to the Sysop who can put them in the ANSFILES
- directory of your TMD. These files are explained below:
-
- WELCOME.TXT This file is displayed to players each time the TMD is
- fired up. This is a great place for a custom welcome
- message. This is an ASCII text file only.
-
- RULES.TXT This file is used to show players the rules for your
- TMD. It is displayed by selecting R>ules from the TMD
- main menu.
-
- It is recommended that you create your own versions of these files and
- send them to the Sysop. Have your Sysop place them in the ANSFILES
- directory off the TMD directory.
-
- That's about all the tutoring you'll need for now. Remember that each
- brief menu can be expanded by pressing the "?" key. Try all the
- options. I think you'll find them easy to navigate and use. If not,
- let me know.
-
-
- Happy Trivia!
